Meagan Flaherty, CPM, LM
Hello and welcome!
My name is Meagan (she/her) and I am a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) located in Smithfield, Virginia. My goal is to bring more accessible, safe, and quality prenatal and birthing options to families seeking alternatives to hospital-based obstetrical care.
I practice with the belief that each person is the expert in their selves and I trust the intuitive knowledge we have regarding our bodies and our babies. My goal is to provide knowledge, guidance, and support for pregnant people and their families as they navigate their choices for pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond so that they feel empowered as individuals and as new parents.
I began my journey in midwifery 2012 after giving birth to my first child. Having struggled through years of infertility, my husband and I were thrilled to finally be in the delivery room and were filled with the excitement and anticipation at the prospect of meeting our baby. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts to educate myself as much as possible for my labor and delivery, this first birth was not the joyful experience I had played out in my head over, and over during the many years we fought to get pregnant. Our child's birthday ended with her being rushed to the local Children's Hospital NICU where she remained on a high frequency ventilator for three weeks while I was left with substantial birth injuries to recover from.
After our daughter returned home healthy, I began recovering from my emotional and physical wounds. I took it upon myself to research and study everything I could about fertility, pregnancy and the labor and delivery process. This path of healing and discovery has led me to find my true calling as a midwife.
I now have four beautiful children, each of which has a unique birth story ranging from a healing unmedicated delivery to an unplanned cesarean section. These experiences have allowed me to truly empathize with clients and have given me a deeper understanding of how our birth experiences shape us as individuals and as parents. In 2018 I became a Certified DONA International doula and started Beltane Birth Services, LLC which became a thriving small business where I offered birth and postpartum doula services, childbirth education, and placenta encapsulation services. In January of 2020 I began my journey as a Student Midwife and graduated with honors from the Bachelors of Science in Midwifery program through the Midwives College of Utah in 2024.
I feel truly blessed and honored to be on this path. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your story.
